"Social media cannot be ignored in this day and age", marketing professionals love to say. This medium is gaining a strong presence in our mind, whether we work in marketing, are business owners or just regular people.
I am addicted to social media - I have to admit it. If I don't read what my friends have to say, if I don't read posts from Matt Cutts, Danny Sullivan, Danny Dover or any other "crazy" people who spend most of their life digging to find answers about marketing, social media, search marketing and other related topics, I feel scared and desperately try to catch up. It's not good to miss it. I know, I'm gloriously busy!A friend of mine "opened" my eyes the other days by posting an article about how people spend their time nowadays. As it was easier to observe my husband :), I realised that every 10-15 minutes of our time spent together as a family he was using his mobile phone. I asked him if he was expecting a call or if his boss sent him an important email, but I was surprised when he told me:
- I am checking the updates on the social media platforms;
- I am checking to see if I got interesting/urgent email from work;
- I am checking the news websites to find about corruption and incompetency :) - checking, checking, checking.
My answer to him was: "Can't you enjoy the scenery outside? Can't you rest your mind and live the moment?" He said: "I don't even realise it...!"
Of course, this is just an example; I am not different, you're not different and I am sure that my kid won't be different.
My boss told me a few weeks ago that Google is no longer respecting our privacy and this is not right. Do you know what my answer was? "You have no choice - regular people cannot penalise Google or Facebook or any other platform. Even if you can do this today, they will come up with something else tomorrow and will eventually tell you when to go to the bathroom because you really need to - they will know what's best for you before you realise it! :)" And come on, Facebook are already telling you when your mum's birthday is, Google already find the perfect condoms for you on their newly built social search engine and LinkedIn tell you that your neighbour read your resume yesterday.
Oh, and it will be much fun when we reach the point where we have to decide which pill to take: "red or blue"? "Live in the truth and be miserable or live in a lie and be happy?"
No conspiracy here, but we'll get there anyway, so why bother fighting then? :))
Google, thanks for my birthday cake! Of course you knew that I like strawberries and marzipan...
